Godfather of AI warns of growing dangers from developments in the field

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in the development of neural networks and deep learning, who is widely seen as the "godfather" of artificial intelligence (AI), has announced his resignation from Google. In a statement, he warned of the growing dangers associated with developments in the field, including the potential for chatbots to become more intelligent than humans. Hinton is the latest in a series of experts who have raised concerns about the speed at which AI is developing and the direction in which it is going. He warned that "bad actors" could use AI for "bad things".

Samsung Bans Use of Generative AI Tools After Sensitive Data Leaks

Samsung is putting a stop to its employees' use of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, after sensitive data was leaked on the platform. The South Korean tech giant is worried that the data transmitted to external servers on these AI platforms could be difficult to retrieve and delete and potentially disclosed to other users. This ban comes after a survey revealed that 65% of respondents believe that AI services pose a security risk. Samsung is preparing its own internal AI tools for translation and summarizing documents and is working on ways to block the upload of sensitive information to external services. So, while Samsung is reviewing security measures to create a more secure environment for using generative AI, it's restricting its use for now.

One Man’s Company’s Loss Is Another Man’s Company’s Gain

Chegg, the popular online learning platform, took a serious hit to their stock price after the CEO, Dan Rosensweig, publicly admitted that OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, is starting to eat into their market share. Apparently, students are starting to show a lot of interest in ChatGPT, which is leading to a significant reduction in Chegg's new customer growth rate. This news sent Chegg's stock price plummeting by a massive 45% at the market open on Tuesday, causing many investors to panic. The company is trying to reconcile with this by partnering with OpenAI to create their own chatbot called "CheggMate," but it seems they won't be launching a beta version until the fall, leaving them vulnerable to continued losses until then. Some Wall Street analysts have even downgraded Chegg's stock rating and slashed their price target, citing concerns that the company's core business could become extinct if ChatGPT continues to gain popularity among students. It looks like Chegg will have to act fast and aggressively to adjust its cost structure and prepare for the technological shift that ChatGPT represents.

On the other hand, it was recently revealed that Walmart is using Pactum AI, a negotiation AI, to negotiate vendor deals. In some ways, this onset of automation shares similarities with high-frequency trading in the mid-2000s. At some point, we’ll see AI negotiate with AI. When this happens, what happens to the humans performing these tasks?
